The Unicorn Has Landed: 1967 Shelby GT500 Eleanor

We always save the best for last.

If you spend enough time turning wrenches and chasing high-end custom builds, you eventually run into cars that are more myth than machine. This week, one of the most fabled cars in cinematic and automotive history rolled through the bay doors here at Rods N Mods: the 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500, better known to the world as Eleanor.

For anyone who grew up watching Memphis Raines tear through the streets in Gone in 60 Seconds, you already know the reputation this car carries. It’s the Unicorn. A fabled creature impossible to capture, and the one car that always seems to fight back.

Getting Reacquainted with a Legend

Memphis had a rough history with Eleanor. She was the one car that no matter how many times he tried to boost it, something always went wrong. She almost got him killed a couple of times, famously took him off the Long Beach pier, and demanded absolute respect behind the wheel.

Because of that cursed history, we aren't just jumping in and dumping the clutch. We’re taking it smooth, talking to her, and getting reacquainted before she hits the asphalt here in Southern Utah.

The Details Make the Myth

Seeing an Eleanor GT500 up close is a totally different experience than watching it on a screen. The presence this car has sitting in the shop is undeniable. It is raw, aggressive, and perfectly engineered to look fast standing completely still.

Every detail on this build is dialed in to match the legend:

  • The Stance & Paint: That iconic Pepper Gray Metallic paint cut with deep black racing stripes, sitting low and aggressive over the custom wheels.

  • The Powerplant: A massive V8 tucked under the hood, ready to scream through those integrated side-exit exhausts.

  • The Cockpit: Inside, it’s all business. From the Carroll Shelby signature and the GT500 Cobra badging on the dash to the legendary "Go-Baby-Go" button armed on the shifter, the interior is built for one thing: going fast.

What’s Next for the GT500?

For now, the Eleanor Mustang is sitting comfortably in the Rods N Mods shop, sharing floor space with our custom '32 Ford and the '59 Caddy. We are going through the systems, making sure she is running as flawlessly as she looks, and preparing to take her out on the street.

If you want to hear this massive V8 fire up and see Eleanor in action, make sure you are following our Instagram and subscribed to the Rods N Mods YouTube channel. We’ll be dropping more behind-the-scenes footage of the unicorn very soon.
