A Brief History of the Pony Car
The Mustang changed the automotive landscape forever. When Lee Iacocca pushed for a stylish, four-seat car to capture a younger generation, the result was a massive hit. On its first day of release in April 1964, Ford sold an astonishing 22,000 Mustangs.
As the years went on, the competition heated up especially with Chevrolet dropping the Camaro in 1967. Ford responded by bulking up the Mustang, leading to the aggressive fastback styling of the late 60s. By 1969, the Mach 1 arrived from the factory as an absolute heavyweight, featuring upgraded suspension and massive V8 engine options like the 428 Super Cobra Jet.
Inside Our '69 Mach 1 Restomod
The red '69 Fastback we took out for a spin in the video might wear the iconic Mach 1 spoiler, but it has plenty of Boss 429 attitude. It went through a full frame-off Restomod build, and the attention to detail is incredible. Even the floor pans feature the factory-correct red oxide finish!
Here is what is currently making this car a blast to drive:
- The Powerplant: Sitting underneath that Boss hood is a Ford 460 that has been stroked out to a massive 521 cubic inches.
- Reliability Upgrades: We recently swapped out the carburetor for a Holley Sniper EFI system, giving it turn-key reliability and smooth power delivery.
- The Stance & Handling: It sits one inch lower on Mustang United aftermarket suspension, allowing it to hug corners significantly better than a stock '69.
- Creature Comforts: It features a modern sound system and air conditioning, making it a comfortable cruiser even in the St. George summer heat.
What’s Next for the Mach 1?
This car has a rich history it originally rolled out of the factory in a stunning Silver Jade green. The owner of the car has always considered the Silver Jade Mach 1 to be his ultimate dream car, so we have some big decisions to make in the shop.
Do we keep the 521 big block and the red paint, or do we strip it down, bring back the classic Silver Jade, and drop in a modern drivetrain for a high-end Restomod finish?
