Built, Not Bought: Inside the Metal Fabrication Shop at Rods N Mods

In the world of classic car restoration, there are "parts swappers" and then there are builders.

At Rods N Mods in St. George, Utah, we pride ourselves on being the latter. While the aftermarket support for classic trucks and muscle cars is better than ever, sometimes the part you need simply doesn't exist. Or, more often, the parts that do exist just aren't good enough for the level of build we are chasing.

That is where our metal fabrication shop comes in.

The Right Tools for the Job

You can’t build an epic ride with basic hand tools alone. We have outfitted our facility with heavy-hitting machinery from Baileigh Industrial including shears, brakes, mills, and power hammers.

Why does this matter to you as a customer? Because it means we aren't limited by what’s in a catalog. If your 1948 Ford needs a custom floor pan to clear a modern chassis, or your Camaro needs a transmission tunnel that looks factory-made but fits a 10-speed automatic, we have the equipment to shape that steel right here in-house.

Case Study: The "Vintage" Modern Engine Cover

A perfect example of our fabrication philosophy is the engine bay of our recent 1956 F100 project.

We love the reliability and horsepower of modern V8 swaps (like the Coyote or LS), but let’s be honest: modern engines can be ugly. They are covered in plastic, wires, and fuel rails that clash with the vintage style of a classic truck.

Instead of slapping on a plastic cover, our fabrication team hand-shaped a custom sheet metal engine cover.

  • The Process: Using the metal brake and slip roll, we formed a cover that mimics the curves of the 1950s bodywork.
  • The Detail: We integrated an original F100 emblem directly into the metalwork.
  • The Result: An engine bay that has the clean, classic soul of 1956, but hides the 400+ horsepower beast underneath.
  • Custom Performance: The Cold Air Intake

Fabrication isn't just about looks; it's about performance. Off-the-shelf air intakes often fit poorly or don't route air efficiently in a custom engine bay.

Recently, we fabricated a custom aluminum cold air intake for one of our builds. By TIG welding the aluminum tubing ourselves, we could route the piping perfectly around the radiator and suspension components, ensuring the engine breathes cool air without sacrificing hood clearance.

Why Choose a Custom Fabrication Shop?

When you choose a shop in Southern Utah for your restoration or restomod, you need to know they can handle the unexpected. Rust repair, chassis modifications, and custom brackets are all part of the game.

At Rods N Mods, we don't send your car away when the work gets hard. We fire up the welders, spin up the lathe, and build the solution ourselves.

Ready to start a build that is truly one-of-a-kind? Contact Rods N Mods today. Whether you need a custom chassis setup, expert rust repair, or a full frame-off build, we have the tools and the talent to make it happen.
